Home » Yelp Feeds ChatGPT: A Generative Engine Optimization Shift
Yelp has agreed to license its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT a real-time source of local business data for the recommendations it serves millions of users. For multi location franchise brands, the deal moves generative engine optimization, or GEO, from a marketing buzzword to a practical concern, because the reviews attached to each location now help shape how an AI describes the brand.
“An AI doesn’t recommend a brand. It recommends an address.”
– Matt Giardino, McKay Advertising + Activation
Yelp first disclosed the agreement with OpenAI in its February 2026 earnings release, and Axios reported the operational details in July, news that pushed Yelp shares up about 8 percent. When a consumer asks ChatGPT for a local recommendation, responses can now include Yelp reviews, ratings and photos, along with Yelp branding and links back to its site, though OpenAI controls how that appears.
The agreement is non-exclusive, leaving Yelp free to license the same data to other AI companies, as it already does with Apple Maps and Yahoo. A “Request a Quote” feature is planned as well, letting users contact local service providers without leaving ChatGPT. Analysts have framed the partnership as a challenge to Google Search and Google Maps for local discovery, an area where ChatGPT had been comparatively weak. ChatGPT has since added the ability to check reservation availability through Yelp and other booking platforms, moving AI discovery closer to direct action.
The change also shifts what a franchise brand’s reputation data is doing. Reviews once helped a customer decide after they found a business. Now they are part of the information an AI weighs when deciding which business to name at all, which puts new importance on individual locations rather than a brand’s overall star rating.
The metric many systems still rely on is the first casualty.
“Brands grade themselves on a system-wide rating, and that number has quietly stopped meaning anything,” Matt Giardino, director of digital activation at McKay Advertising + Activation, said. “An AI doesn’t recommend a brand. It recommends an address. If a dozen of your units have a recurring service-time complaint running through their reviews, that isn’t noise against a 4.2 average. That’s the sentence a consumer reads explaining why they should go somewhere else.”
Giardino has also pointed to an internal gap at many franchisors, which have a clear owner for media buying but no clear owner for their local listings, a distinction that mattered little until those listings became source data for an answer engine.
Reputation specialists say brands do not need to reinvent their strategy. They need to execute it more consistently across every location. In practice that means monitoring Yelp alongside other review platforms, keeping each location’s details accurate and analyzing what customers repeatedly say rather than tracking a single score.
There is no published formula for how ChatGPT ranks local businesses, and OpenAI has not said that any rating or review count guarantees placement.
“Nobody has published a ranking formula, and anyone selling a GEO score is guessing,” Giardino said. “What you can actually do is build a realistic prompt set for each market, run it monthly, and track how often your locations surface against the competitors you care about. It’s less satisfying than a dashboard number, and it’s the only thing I’d be willing to put in front of a franchisee.”
That volatility is not hypothetical. In mid-August, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell about 86 percent in a matter of days, dropping from roughly 3.8 percent to 0.5 percent after an unannounced change in how ChatGPT pulls information from the web, according to data from the AI visibility platform PromptWatch. Much of that lost ground shifted to official and first-party sources rather than other discussion sites. The pattern is a reminder of the distinction at the center of the Yelp deal. Yelp is supplying its data through a direct agreement rather than relying on being scraped and cited, which makes it far less exposed to the overnight retrieval changes that reshuffled Reddit.
AI keeps reshaping how prospects and customers find franchise brands, and the channels franchise marketers prioritize continue to shift. In that environment, the brands positioned to benefit are those keeping reviews, listings and reputation consistent across every location. A strong national average is no longer enough on its own.
